Square Soft riddles!

@musenji  - March 15, 2011, 4:06 a.m.

Riddles are really friggin fun. Verily!

The rules:

  1. One riddle at a time. Whoever correctly guesses the riddle (and has the answer confirmed by the riddler) gets to post the next one. They have 48 hours to do so, then the floor is open. (They can also decline to post, and leave the floor open, but c'mon guys, give it a shot.)

  2. The riddler gets to decide whether to give hints, and whether to answer questions. (i.e. It's not 20 questions folks.)

Something that has worked very well is for guessers to post the reasoning behind their guesses--which gives the riddler a chance to steer them along, in an organic fashion. And it keeps people from just randomly guessing.

  1. Riddles are to be made based on Square Soft games (pre-2003) that were released in America. (The reason for this is to limit the field and keep it relatively accessible to all.)

  2. If you are posting a riddle, pick one game to riddle about, and state it in your initial post.

So, the first riddle. It's from Final Fantasy VII:

I reside in darkness where evil’s enlightened Mostly contorted, but sometimes I’m heightened

If you look around, you can tell I’ve been preying Though when I appear, the guitarist keeps playing

Ok, I've got one. From Final Fantasy IX:

I am what I steal I say what I feel, Yet until the peak I will never speak, And when I ascend to guard my best friend, I'll shred you to ribbons and dissapear 'til the end.

Max Depa is correct! Your turn! The answer is the beautiful, talented Mog that Eiko keeps in her dress.
Here it is dissected if anyone is interested:

I am what I steal
When first met, Mog and Eiko are stealing food. Soon after, Quina thinks that Mog would make a great meal!
I say what I feel,
Eiko often asks Mog for advice or what she is thinking. Mog always answers, but only with some variation of "Kupo!".
Yet until the peak I will never speak,
Peak refers to both Mount Gulug and to Mog's Trance. While in Mount Gulug, Mog trances and transforms into Madeen. It is at this point, that Mog actually speaks words.
And when I ascend to guard my best friend,
When Mog enters trance, she "ascends" and becomes the Holy Eidolon Madeen so that she can guard Eiko (her best friend) from Zorn and Thorn. "Guard" also refers to Eiko having an ability she can learn called Guardian Mog.
I'll shred you to ribbons
Mog uses Terra Homing to easily dispatch of Zorn and Thorn when transformed into Madeen. After this, she gives Eiko an extremely useful ribbon.
and dissapear 'til the end.
Mog is no more after transforming into Madeen, as Madeen never transforms back into being Mog.
PS: Mog <3

Mog is awesome** From Final Fantasy VIII

I am very polite, Sir, are you interested in my rare card? Pressure cause a bad joke to my friend but even if something is changing we're still around here.

i think i know who you mean, but i only played that game when it came out, so i'm clueless on a name. Some guy at the school [who if i remember right is standing near the exit of a big commons with another guy] who is one of the first to play the card game with you, and he's there even after all the ruckus starts the real-world "final exam". edit: wow thats vague, i need a name...

My first guess would be biggs or wedge...I seem to remember one of them being polite. Elnoyle (or elvoret?) blew one of them off the communications tower which could be considered comedic relief. And they appear throughout the game. However, you're probably closer with the last line, xu, it probably does refer to a single location where the answer "hangs around". But I figured I'd take a shot. Ahh, hmm. I forget if their card is even rare. Maybe it isn't.

Is it the guy with the Quistis card? I think he hangs out in the cafeteria; although, I could be completely wrong.

Had to make an account just for this thread... XD Its Watts of the Timber Owls. "I am very polite, Sir," - always addresses people as sir. "Are you interested in my rare card?" - later in the game they have a character card you can win. "Pressuer cause a bad joke to my friend." - his friend is Zone, whenever he is under pressure he claims his stomach hurts. "But even if something is changing, we're still around here." - When you meet them in Timber, the code to let the Timber Owls know you're the SeeDs is "Even if the forests change, the owls are still around."
