Square Soft riddles!

@musenji  - March 15, 2011, 4:06 a.m.

Riddles are really friggin fun. Verily!

The rules:

  1. One riddle at a time. Whoever correctly guesses the riddle (and has the answer confirmed by the riddler) gets to post the next one. They have 48 hours to do so, then the floor is open. (They can also decline to post, and leave the floor open, but c'mon guys, give it a shot.)

  2. The riddler gets to decide whether to give hints, and whether to answer questions. (i.e. It's not 20 questions folks.)

Something that has worked very well is for guessers to post the reasoning behind their guesses--which gives the riddler a chance to steer them along, in an organic fashion. And it keeps people from just randomly guessing.

  1. Riddles are to be made based on Square Soft games (pre-2003) that were released in America. (The reason for this is to limit the field and keep it relatively accessible to all.)

  2. If you are posting a riddle, pick one game to riddle about, and state it in your initial post.

So, the first riddle. It's from Final Fantasy VII:

I reside in darkness where evil’s enlightened Mostly contorted, but sometimes I’m heightened

If you look around, you can tell I’ve been preying Though when I appear, the guitarist keeps playing

I can give the strength of ten when you are caged like a hen. I can give the gift of life while I am pleasing your wife. You must backtrack to find me or else I will deny thee the reward of a treasure and the soft waves of pleasure.
Ok, this is definitely hard. Hmm, so it's an item. It doesn't have to do with the eidolon itself, but perhaps attaining one? So here's my thoughts? First line: An item with +10 str? 2nd line: Just something to rhyme with 10? 3rd line: An item with Life ability? 4th line: Possibly a rod or a shaft lol? 5th line: A few spots I can recall where you have to backtrack is to get to Hades and the stupid coffee quest, possibly to stellazio quest? 6th line: Well, it is a quest you HAVE to do to get the item so it's rare? 7th line: Well, the treasure implies the item? 8th line: Soft waves would indicate water? So maybe an ocean chocograph or something along those lines? The closest thing I can come up with: Rod, Ocean Chocograph, Life Ability would be Garnet's Whale Whisker but obviously that's not right since you said character(s). You got me stumped bro.

To recap, it has nothing to do with an Eidolon. It is an item that is awarded to you which grants you access to other rewards. It is also a reward in a different sense to certain characters in the game that may or may not be playable. The first four lines are actually quite literal. Even the "pleasing the wife" one sort of is. They also take place and can be seen in action in the same area. In hindsight, the backtracking line may not be worded well. You must backtrack on occasion with the item itself to receive the reward. There are multiple rewards culminating with the "soft waves of pleasure" if you get them all. That does indeed refer to an ocean... specifically a beach or something you would use on one XD. If needed I can throw out the specific area where the first four lines take place and I'm sure it will become super easy XD.

Caged like a hen gives me images of when you are in that cage hanging above the abyss and you need to get momentum and start swinging it. I have no recollection of where that was... Alexandria?

That is a good guess, frogma. However, the location where the first four lines take place in is Gizamaluke's Grotto XD.

But Frogma, there's nothing that gives you the "strength of ten" in that situation, any more than normal. It's just button-pushing, right? What other situations involve cages? [edit] ah, new post

ahh, well. I know the answer now but I used walkthrough information to find it. I never explicitly made a rule forbidding that, but I guess I'll leave it up to anyone who is solving it based purely on memory.

GrimacingGrimoire is correct! The answer is Kupo Nuts.
Here it is dissected, if anyone is interested:

I can give the strength of ten when you are caged like a hen.
While passing through Gizamaluke's Grotto there is a moogle that informs you that her husband has been trapped under a giant heavy bell (caged like a hen) by Zorn and Thorn. When the trapped moogle smells a kupo nut that was given to Vivi earlier, he gains the power of a madman on PCP and tosses the bell to the side.
I can give the gift of life
From that point on, every time you give a kupo nut to the moogle, him and his wife go at it and pop out another child.
while I am pleasing your wife.
The moogle's wife is extremely happy and ecstatic when he is able to lift the bell off of himself. This could also refer to the constant banging that him and his wife apparently do when they get kupo nuts, now that I think about it.
You must backtrack to find me or else I will deny thee the reward of a treasure
You get kupo nuts from mailing letters to other moogles. They can then be turned in for random rewards such as elixers. However, there are a few instances where you must backtrack a considerable distance to turn in the kupo nut. Failing to backtrack and turn it in will mean that you will miss out on another kupo nut. If you don't turn in all the kupo nuts, you do not get the final reward.
and the soft waves of pleasure.
The final reward includes the final piece to the beach clothing set: an eight Aloha T-shirt. After this you can equip every single character with the beach set for fun and try to do the beach quest.

here is a pretty simple one from Xenogears: MY FRIEND HAS A SON WHO LIVES WITH A PRIEST I LIVE ON A SHIP WHERE THE WELS ARE WEAK, ANOTHER OF MY FRIENDS HAS A HEALTHY ADDICTION TO ETHER BUT HE ACTS LIKE A PRICK SO I DON'T HANG OUT WITH EITHER
